The Obama administration last week issued a proposed rule governing hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas on public land that will - for the first time - require disclosure of the chemicals used. This will make President Obama's environmental friends happy and it sounds good to me as well.

It's that time again! Graduation time. Graduation from preschool, from grade school, from junior high, from high school and college. Each one is a step into the unknown and an entrance into another stage of life. Each one is a joyous occasion with a little apprehension of what lies ahead.

Personally, as a resident of the Buckeye School District, I find it important that we have a top notch education system that is supported by the community who in turn increases the value of living in this community. In order to make intelligent decisions you need to be knowledgeable; educated. My husband explained with great passion, just the other day, his mantra for direct sales: Knowledge = Confidence = Enthusiasm. I think this is ideal at any age, in any situation and in any area of your life. In order for Buckeye residents to make an educated decision regarding our school system, I encourage you to attend the State of the Schools luncheon on Tuesday, May 15 at 11:30 a.m. in Buckeye's Junior High School. The Valley City Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the luncheon and urges you to attend. Call 330-483-1111 by May 14th with number attending.

As a person who has grown up in Norton, attended the public schools here for 12 years, taught in the high school for my entire teaching career and lived side-by-side with the Norton community members, I am most concerned about the direction of city council.

I don't know how other readers feel but I'm exhausted reading the ridiculousness and outright lies that the right wing world pushes upon some Americans. Obama doesn't want your guns or your grandma's life via "death panel." Those of you worried about Medicare should be more worried about what the Ryan budget would do to your poor granny.

Over the course of my first 15 months in Congress, I have come to realize two things about our nation's capital: Washington is indeed broken and, even with multiple consecutive years of trillion dollar deficits, no one there can agree on where we need to cut spending or how to get it done.

The round table discussion held in the North Royalton High School Community Room, the center of the 24th Senate district, is commendable and encouraged by this writer. Unfortunately the majority of time the subject matter was inconsistent with the schools students' requirements: funding, more money, budget cuts and lack of money!

Wow! That letter to the editor last week from the guy in Hinckley was really something. He was upset with the people in Florida, Allen West, Republicans, Joe Wilson, Rush Limbaugh, Jan Brewer and Tea Party folks. He sums it all up by saying: "This current Republican Party is the most uncivil, hateful bunch of people I have ever seen in politics."

One of my proudest accomplishments during this General Assembly has been balancing the state budget without raising taxes. This is especially true after facing a deficit of $8 billion because of the irresponsible spending and reliance on one-time money for recurring expenses by previous administrations.

As a reminder, ODOT has scheduled several projects for this summer that may affect your daily travel route.
US 224/Interstate 76 from State Route 57 to the Summit County line is scheduled for eastbound reconstruction, ramp closings and bridge improvements. Until the completion of all phases of the 2012 construction, the eastbound side of I-76 between State Route 57 and the Summit County line will be reduced to one lane of traffic and speeds will be reduced to 45 mph.

The reason I am writing this is to hopefully bring awareness of a little known disease to the public. It seems like in any given month there is awareness for some type of disease or cause that affects our family, friends or coworkers. If there is a cause or a disease, you can bet there's going to be a ribbon with a specific color for it.

When some letter-writers disregard fact or concentrate on multiple negative aspects of a topic, the resulting letter becomes suspect. I am not referring to individual complaints. We all complain from time to time. The letters to which I refer are those that contain laundry lists, assign blame and present incomplete or misleading information. Often there is an alternate agenda.

It is a great statement to the honest tax payers of Ohio to see that our wonderful leaders have once again taken it upon themselves to give tax cheaters another chance to pay their delinquent taxes and to forgive their penalties and eliminate 50 percent of the interest they owe.

With reference to your May 5 article "Sheriff targeting speeders with help of state funds," - a fact, $40,000 for 60 hours of overtime is $666 per hour. Seems like a lot of money for one hour of work. Even at $50/hour overtime pay, where is the other $616? Since we know the objective of writing tickets is, in addition to "safety" considerations, to make money for, in this case, the county, would it not make more sense to pocket the $40,000, (seems as though that is what may have occurred given the unaccounted $616), put up some "slow down" signs and call it a day?

A committee of residents was commissioned by the Board of Education to look at the 2006 Strategic Plan, determine the current state of facilities and make recommendations on updating the plan and where to go with buildings. Over the past six months, the ad-hoc committee has been gathering data and information that will help determine where we have been, where we are now and where we would like to be. There are many options and choices ahead of the district.

I have a solution to the school budget crises that won't require a tax levy, a local income tax or any other type of tax they can think of. It is accomplished in two steps. Step One: Set up a school fund where people can make tax deductible contributions to the school system of their choice and/or create a continual fund raising program (i.e. running a BINGO program). Step two: Take any remaining shortfall in the budget, divide it evenly by the number of students and send a tuition bill to the parents of those students and/or reduce staff accordingly to fit the budget. That's what private schools do. Why should public schools be exempt from this?
